The Past, Present and Future of the Malaysia's Economy

The Past, Present and Future of the Malaysia's Economy

Malaysia has long faced the dual challenges of a fiscal deficit and a high national debt since the 1997 Asia Financial Crisis. Successive governments have vigorously promoted tax reform and fiscal adjustments, from the controversial goods and sales tax to the later sales and services tax, and more recently, the targeted fuel subsidy, all aimed at promoting economic transformation and improving the country's fiscal position. However, fiscal reforms often come with pain points, sparking social controversy and pressure on people's livelihoods.

At the same time, after his second term as US President, Trump has introduced a series of tariff increases, marking a further escalation of US protectionist trade policies. This move not only impacts the global supply chain but also complicates and volatiles the international trade landscape. Faced with the U.S.-China Rivalry and the reshaping of the global economic order, how can Malaysia survive in this difficult situation?

To delve deeper into these economic issues, Oneworld Hanxin College will invite Professor Wong Chin-Yoong at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman to present a lecture on "The Past, Present, and Future of the Malaysian Economy" at its November "Hanxin Lecture Series." He received his PhD in Economics from Universiti Putra Malaysia. His doctoral dissertation, which examined the macroeconomic impacts of global production sharing, was awarded the Distinction Award. Dr. Wong's economic analysis and commentary are frequently featured in major domestic and international media.

The course consists of four lectures: "How Did the Malaysia‘s Economy Get to Where It Is Today? Reinterpreting the Malaysian Economy Over the Past Six Decades," "Is Reform Disruptive and Costly? Clarifying the Pros and Cons of Economic Transformation and Tax and Subsidy Reforms," "Is Globalization Dead? How Malaysia Navigates Sino-US Competition, Trump's Tariffs, and the Shift and Diffusion of Hegemony," and "What Will the Malaysian Economy Look Like in 2035? A Wealthy, Young, and Globally Influential Middle Power."
